A Century of Horror

1960s

Targets

Peter Bogdanovich was famously given two stipulations from producer Roger Corman when starting Targets. You gotta film two days with Boris Karloff, and you gotta use 14 minutes of footage from The Terror. From those rules, he turned in one of the first modern masterpieces about the changing guard of horror. Karloff plays an old-time horror actor who is confronted with the true terror of a purposeless mass sniper who murders his family and then starts picking off people on the freeway and at a climactic drive-in movie.

Spider Baby: Or The Maddest Story Ever Told

A ‘60s update on The Old Dark House, Spider Baby is exploitation-master Jack Hill’s weirdest and wildest film. Lon Chaney Jr. is trying his best to keep control of the Merrye family, who’ve been cursed with insanity that kicks in at 10 years old and gets stronger the older they get.

Orgy of the Dead

Another movie I don’t know if I’d recommend in polite company, but nobody who’s this deep on the Halloween Haven website is polite company. This is less a movie and more 10 burlesque performances done in a shoddy smoke-filled cemetery set with some truly poetic Ed Wood dialog connecting all the dancing. The perfect accompaniment for a very particular tone of Halloween party.

Castle of Blood

A journalist bets Edgar Allan Poe that ghosts aren’t real and an eavesdropper convinces him to spend the night in his haunted house. A bunch of ghosts pop in to say “boo!” in a truly atmospheric castle and Barbara Steele is a ghost who’s got to help him escape. If you need more information than this, we do not have the same taste.
